Indigenous Peoples’ Day

Today, we honor and recognize the Indigenous peoples who have lived on, cared for, and shaped the lands we call home for generations.

Here in the Colorado mountains, we walk, hike, work, and make our lives among landscapes that hold thousands of years of Indigenous history and connection. The Ute people have deep roots throughout Colorado, including the mountains of our own region.

Indigenous Peoples’ Day is an opportunity to learn more, listen to Indigenous voices, honor traditions and cultures, and recognize that Indigenous communities are not simply part of our history—they are here today.

Today, we’re grateful for the opportunity to live and work in these beautiful mountains and mindful of the people who came before us and continue to call these lands home.

🌙 GRAND COUNTY AFTER DARK: THE CHIEF'S FIRE 🔥

Long before Hot Sulphur Springs became a resort town, the Ute people knew these warm mineral springs as a special place. And there is an old Ute legend about how the springs got their warmth.

The story tells of an elderly Ute chief whose young warriors left their village to cross the mountains and go to battle. The old chief warned them not to go, but they went anyway. And they never came back. The chief waited, keeping a fire burning for their return.

Day after day, he watched and waited for his warriors to return. As the seasons passed, his grief grew heavier. Eventually, he died beside his campfire, still waiting for the young men who never returned.

According to the legend, the chief's fire never went out. Instead, its warmth traveled deep into the earth… and became the warm, healing waters of the springs.

So the next time you visit Hot Sulphur Springs, take a moment to think about the old chief sitting beside his fire, waiting for his warriors to come home.

Is it simply a beautiful legend?

JEWELRY CARE 101: 10K & 14K GOLD

“So it's REAL gold… can I just never take it off?”

Well, yes… 10K and 14K solid gold are some of the most durable jewelry metals around. But even real gold deserves a little TLC!

Unlike sterling silver, solid gold doesn't tarnish the same way, which makes it a fantastic choice for everyday wear. But that doesn't mean it's completely immune to everything you throw at it.

Shower: An occasional shower isn't going to destroy your gold, but soap and shampoo can leave a film that dulls its shine.

Swimming: We'd recommend taking it off before getting in the pool. Chlorine can damage the other metals mixed with gold and, with repeated exposure, can weaken the jewelry.

Lotions & sunscreen: These can build up on your jewelry and make it look cloudy or dull.

Working out: Sweat and everyday grime can collect around settings and chains, so a quick clean now and then is a good idea.

How do you clean it?

Keep it simple! Use a little mild dish soap and warm water. Gently clean with a soft cloth or a very soft toothbrush, rinse thoroughly and dry completely.

And here's the good news:

10K and 14K gold are made for living in.

You don't have to treat your gold necklace like it's a priceless museum artifact. Wear it, enjoy it, and let it be part of your everyday adventures!

Just maybe give it a break before you jump into the hot tub.

GRAND COUNTY AFTER DARK: LULU CITY

Deep in what is now Rocky Mountain National Park sits the remains of a town that once bustled with miners, saloons, stores, a hotel, and even a post office.

Lulu City.

Founded in 1879 after silver was discovered in the area, the town grew quickly—but its boom didn't last. Low-grade ore, brutal winters, and the enormous cost of hauling the ore out of the mountains sent people packing. By 1885, Lulu City was essentially a ghost town.

But here's where the story gets spooky…

A 1952 Rocky Mountain News report shared a legend that residents left so quickly that clothes were supposedly still hanging in closets and dishes were left sitting on tables.

And that raises a rather creepy question…
Why would people leave so quickly that they didn't even take their clothes?

Was it simply the harsh reality of a failed mining town? Did the residents know they had to leave and simply abandon what they couldn't carry?

Or… was there something else that sent them running?

We may never know.
Today, only a handful of cabin ruins remain, slowly disappearing back into the forest. As seen in this picture.

So the next time you're hiking through the Kawuneeche Valley, imagine 500 people living among those trees…

And then imagine walking into one of those abandoned cabins and finding clothes still hanging in the closet.

JEWELRY CARE 101: STEEL

Looking for jewelry that doesn't need quite as much babysitting?

Steel is your friend.

Steel jewelry is durable, affordable and wonderfully low-maintenance. It's also much more resistant to tarnishing than sterling silver, which makes it a great choice for everyday wear.

That doesn't mean you should never take it off, though.

Soap, lotions, sunscreen, sweat and chlorine can build up on any piece of jewelry and leave it looking dull or dirty.

The good news? Cleaning steel is easy!

Use a little mild dish soap and warm water.
Gently clean with a soft cloth or soft toothbrush.
Rinse well.
Dry completely.

And while steel can handle a lot more than sterling silver, we still recommend taking your jewelry off before swimming or soaking in a hot tub. Your jewelry—and your skin—will be happier for it!

If you’ve been in our Winter Park store, you’ve probably seen the necklace and earrings in spiny oyster and turquoise. Well… now we have rings to complete your collection! 💍🏔️

And if you’re not familiar with spiny oyster, it’s a natural shell material known for its beautiful orange, red, coral, and sometimes purple tones. Each piece has its own unique coloring and pattern, so no two stones are exactly alike. Paired with turquoise, it makes for a seriously gorgeous Southwestern-inspired combination.
