Scarred Shores: Open-Pit Mining in Dinapigue
An expansive aerial view captures the full extent of active open-pit mining operations stretching from high up in the Sierra Madre range down to the coastal shoreline of Dinapigue, Isabela. Exposed earth, settling ponds, and winding haul roads slice through the contiguous forest canopy, leading directly to a seaside pier complex built for mineral export.
It serves as a stark reminder that not all legal and permitted operations are good for the environment, and not every shade of blue is peaceful. The striking turquoise and blue settling ponds visible near the upper extraction site may look vibrant from above, but that unnatural color is a dangerous illusion. These artificial pools hold concentrated mine runoff, heavy metals, and acidic wastewater trapped behind temporary earth walls. A single breach or heavy rainfall can send toxic sediment cascading down the mountain slopes, poisoning nearby freshwater streams, smothering coastal habitats, and directly threatening the health, livelihoods, and safety of downstream communities.~jsl
