What do you, as a jewellery designer, wear to the fashion capital of the world for Fashion Week?

Well, you start with the jewellery and then work out the rest from there, I guess!

This is the lapel pin I designed and made, to wear on the night of my runway show at The Young Designers Show, Pavillion Gravelle.

As for the rest of my Paris Fashion Week collection you'll have to wait until the 6th October.

Lacrimarium - "gathering up my tears".

This is my interpretation of an ancient Roman vessel, a Lacrimarium, said to have been used to gather up the tears of a mourner and then buried with the deceased.

This brooch is a very personal expression of grief. For some time now I have felt compelled to create a piece of jewellery to reflect my despair, my sadness, my sense of helplessness in response to the loss of countless, innocent lives due to war, and natural disasters around the world.

We seem doomed never to learn from the past.

When I launched Deon Smith Jewellery 5 years ago I never ever thought that I would one day be part of Paris Fashion Week!

But, in October I will be presenting a new collection of jewellery, on the runway, at Pavillion Gravelle.

I'll be part of show of emerging designers whose focus is slow fashion and sustainability.

Paris in October should be fun!

These opening lines of Emily Dickinson's poem have inspired me to design a piece of jewellery that is both utterly simple, yet singular. And which attempts to convey the emotion that these lines of poetry invoke.

I don't think I'm there yet, but I'm going to keep trying.

'hic sunt dracones' - 'Here be Dragons'!

This phrase was used by medieval cartographers to indicate unexplored or dangerous territories.

However, in this instance, repurposing and remodeling antique or vintage jewellery is neither unexplored nor dangerous territory!

This silver brooch was once half of a Victorian belt buckle that was relegated to a drawer labelled "belonged to my grandmother".

The beautiful 'snake skin' jasper is thanks to and is the perfect partnering, elevating an unappreciated antique buckle to a contemporary statement brooch.

Today, 16th April, is World Semicolon Day - to raise awareness for mental health, su***de prevention and self-injury.

The semicolon symbol represents a pause rather than an end - symbolizing that a person's story continues, encouraging them to keep going, and acting as a sign of hope.

Let's help to break the stigma surrounding mental health, encourage open conversations and support those who have experienced suicidal thoughts or attempts.

This brooch, handcrafted in sterling, is from my Punctuated Collection.
