'hic sunt dracones' - 'Here be Dragons'!

This phrase was used by medieval cartographers to indicate unexplored or dangerous territories.

However, in this instance, repurposing and remodeling antique or vintage jewellery is neither unexplored nor dangerous territory!

This silver brooch was once half of a Victorian belt buckle that was relegated to a drawer labelled "belonged to my grandmother".

The beautiful 'snake skin' jasper is thanks to and is the perfect partnering, elevating an unappreciated antique buckle to a contemporary statement brooch.

Today, 16th April, is World Semicolon Day - to raise awareness for mental health, su***de prevention and self-injury.

The semicolon symbol represents a pause rather than an end - symbolizing that a person's story continues, encouraging them to keep going, and acting as a sign of hope.

Let's help to break the stigma surrounding mental health, encourage open conversations and support those who have experienced suicidal thoughts or attempts.

It's such a privilege to be featured on the platform.

Embarking on a second career at the age of 60 has sometimes felt like a very foolhardy decision, but having my designs and jewellery featured on international platforms makes me realize that I must be doing something right!

So I think I'll carry on doing my thing at the southern most tip of Africa, navigating global challenges and the soaring price of metals while exploring new ideas and translating them into wearable art jewellery.

A new year and a new piece of jewellery from Deon Smith Jewellery.

This brooch was a special commission. The starting point was the beautiful and large opal, its colours reminiscent of light reflecting off sea waves.

The opal is paired with tourmalines, in shades of teal and green, peridot, a yellow sapphire, rainbow moonstones and small lab grown diamonds. The whole set in platinum.
