Congratulations, , on placing in the Top 10 of this year’s PlatAfrica competition. We are extremely proud to see one of our designers recognised for her creativity and craftsmanship on such a big stage.
This year’s PlatAfrica theme is Equilibrium, which Aimee explored through the relationship between South Africa’s Cape sugarbird and protea, drawing inspiration from the balance and interconnectedness found in nature.
African Harmony
South Africa's fauna and flora are among the most diverse in the world. Fynbos, found mainly in the Cape Floristic Region, supports an extraordinary range of plant and animal life, much of which is found nowhere else on Earth.
The Cape sugarbird is especially significant and has evolved alongside flowering proteas in a remarkable example of co-evolution. The sugarbird feeds on nectar using its long, curved beak. As it moves from flower to flower, pollen adheres to its feathers and is transferred between plants, making it an important pollinator. In return, the protea provides a reliable food source, illustrating a mutually beneficial ecological relationship.
The theme Equilibrium explores the concepts of balance, harmony, and interconnectedness. These are qualities we often strive for in our lives and relationships, yet they can be difficult to achieve in an increasingly complex and fast-paced world. Inspired by the enduring relationship between the sugarbird and the protea, these earrings reflect the idea that true balance is created through mutual support, family, friendships, colleagues, and community.
The earrings are a quiet tribute to the beauty of balance not as a destination, but as a living rhythm. They remind us that true equilibrium is born through the gentle exchange of trust, support, and adaptation, where every connection strengthens the whole and allows each part to flourish.
