This year, I decided to spend Garden Day differently. Away from my own garden, my home, or an event I’d been invited to, I chose to visit the Johannesburg Garden Club Open Gardening in Inanda.

Oh, what a beautiful afternoon it has been! And having my little sisters and my aunt along made it really special.

Sometimes, it’s lovely to step away from your own little corner of the world and simply enjoy someone else’s garden.

Happy Garden Day, South Africa!

Seasonal goodness.

Nothing beats an interview in your mother tongue 😂❤️ Navakoma AL’S FLORA FARM and flower shop on how Akanaka Blooms started!

The year before I started flower farming, I did a lot of research and discovered dahlia propagation through cuttings. And so my propagation journey began. I started taking cuttings of just about everything, and I have a green thumb, if you will! 😀

This morning, I was taking cuttings while listening to music, and this particular song really spoke to me.

Loosely translated, it says: “Open the way for me, Lord, so I may see Your light. There are things standing in my way. Light the way for me, Lord.”

And isn’t that life sometimes? We keep planting, growing and trying, trusting that the way will become clearer as we go.

As for my dahlia cuttings, I use good old potting mix mixed with perlite to improve drainage. I also use rooting hormone, but if that’s not your thing, skip it!

Some tubers are generous with cuttings, others are not. Some cuttings root quickly, while others take their sweet time. That’s part of the journey, and you learn as you go.

Give it a try! You’ll be surprised how quickly you can build up your dahlia stock from just a few tubers.

Yesterday was beautiful. ❤️

My sister in every sense of the word, AL’S FLORA FARM and flower shop , came to visit! We met on Instagram five years ago and immediately clicked. We spoke about flowers, bounced ideas off each other, and she was such a pillar of strength during my first flower farm’s water woes.

She is Zimbabwean-born, a non-practising lawyer like me, and a flower farmer in Uganda, so naturally we had A LOT to talk about. 😂🌸

We shared our flower-farming war stories, played, prayed, laughed and had so much fun together.

So grateful for this beautiful sisterhood. ❤️ Thank you for stopping by, vakoma.
