Retro Era (1935–1950s): This period is defined by bold, dramatic, and sculptural designs. Jewelers favored tall settings with sweeping curves, ribbons, and scrolls to maximize brilliance and create an oversized, glamorous look popularized by Hollywood.
Victorian Era (1837–1901): The classic, high-pronged solitaire was born in 1886 when Tiffany & Co. introduced a setting designed to lift the diamond off the band, allowing light to pass through the stone and increase its sparkle.@
1970s & 1980s: The 1970s saw a revival of high settings with multi-tiered "ballerina" designs (where a central stone is framed by tapered baguettes). The 1980s also heavily featured tall Cathedral settings and opulent halos for larger stones.
