A Hi, I’m Nzwisisai (Nzwi), flower farmer, grower, seed hoarder and the human behind Akanaka Blooms

While I no longer practise law, I still work in Alternative Dispute Resolution, helping people navigate workplace conflict through mediation, investigations and arbitration. Somewhere along the way, flower farming became the balance to that world, slower, more grounded and deeply connected to the seasons.

What started as a small experiment with growing flowers quickly became something much bigger. Between seedling trays, muddy boots, irrigation pipes and early morning harvests, Akanaka Blooms is slowly taking shape.

Today we grow seasonal flowers for florists, event planners, DIY brides, workshops and Pick-Your-Own mornings, with wholesale buckets heading into Joburg every week.

Here you’ll find both the beauty and the reality of flower farming, overflowing buckets, failed crops, muddy fields, weather stress and everything in between.

If you’re new here, welcome.
And if you’ve been here from the beginning, thank you for being part of the journey

Cover girl moment

Honoured to feature on the cover of SHEQ Management Magazine Issue 2, 2026.

As a sustainable flower farmer, I believe chemicals should never be the first line of defence. On our farm we prioritise preventative and ecological growing practices wherever possible through crop rotation, pest scouting, succession planting, biodiversity, healthy soil practices and crop management.

But where agricultural chemicals are used, worker protection, proper handling and safety equipment are essential. Protecting people and protecting the environment should go hand in hand.

Thank you to .global for the PPE featured in this shoot and for helping drive awareness around workplace safety.

Yesterday’s rain was something else. The stream burst its banks and for a moment the farm felt completely overtaken by water.

As stressful as storms can be on a flower farm, there is also something beautiful about watching the land drink deeply again.

I have carved, and continue to carve, my path as a wholesale grower.

I am not a florist. I am not particularly good at floral arrangement, and that is okay.

What I do love, and where I truly find myself is in seed starting and propagation and growing things. That is where I thrive.

This journey has taught me that we are all different, in our talents, in our strengths, and in our “why”.

And there is space for all of it.

Sweet pea seedlings will be ready in the next 4-6 weeks.

To make sure you don’t miss out, I recommend pre-ordering so I can sow accordingly.

Our mix is made up of beautifully scented varieties I’ve collected over time a soft, romantic palette with that classic sweet pea fragrance.

My personal favourite in the mix is Turquoise Lagoon.

Limited quantities. Pre-orders now open on our website.

As the dahlias started blowing their centres, I reflected on just how fast the season has flown by.

It has been a long, painful, sometimes joyous journey.
The lesson? Don’t give up.

For us, it was really half a season, we only started getting a few blooms from October/November after the farm move. But oh… what a blessing it has been.

This time last year, I was somewhere between despair, tears and hope as we let go of “kuMeyerton”, as we affectionately called it.

Our old farm in Homelands, Meyerton brought me both pain and joy. It showed me what I was capable of, but also made me realise that if I stayed, I would remain on the merry-go-round of hope.

We drilled 5 boreholes hoping for good water to meet our farming needs, but alas. We built infrastructure and invested, but the cycle would continue each season, hope when it rains, and despair when the African sun blazes hot.

It wasn't an easy decision. It was painful. We had built the farm with our hearts and souls. We had invested financially and emotionally. We had hope. But sometimes you have to be honest with yourself, and growth requires that kind of honesty.

As I was clearing the old farm and preparing to move, and facing some unexpected turmoil (a story for another day), I saw the goodness of God, because He gave me strength.

I am a devotee of the Lord’s Divine Mercy and pray the Chaplet regularly (used to be daily… but oh well, we fall 🤣🙈). But the grace remains.

As the 2025/2026 season draws to a close and we prepare for the next, my prayer is this:

May we all achieve our dreams.
May we not step on the toes of others to get ahead.
May our hopes, dreams and aspirations flourish.

I am also incredibly grateful for my flower friends, my Hort Couture tribe, and our customers, followers, friends and family, thank you for walking this journey with us.

And to everyone who has believed that I can, that Tinashe and I can, thank you. Truly.

Alongside falling more in love with my husband and watching my babies grow, my dream is to grow beautiful, quality flowers that you'll love.

With love,
Nzwi
