The first thing anyone notices on a Luminor is the bridge. It locks the crown down under a lever, a device Panerai patented internationally in 1956, and on the 47mm Luminor 1950 case it is still the signature in profile.

The black dial keeps to the essentials: luminous numerals at twelve, three and six, small seconds at nine o’clock, and a power reserve gauge marked in hours from 0 to 72. Behind the open caseback, the hand-wound Calibre P.3002 runs for three days on a single winding.

Wind it on a Sunday night, and it is still running on Wednesday evening. Winding becomes a ritual you keep, not a chore you remember.

Face on, the Code 11.59 by Audemars Piguet is round. In profile, it shows what it was keeping to itself: an octagonal middle case, set between the bezel and the caseback.

The case is 18-carat gold throughout: white gold, interwoven with the pink gold of the octagon, which shows only in profile. The sunburst lacquered dial carries grey and black hues. On the reverse, the selfwinding movement turns in full view behind the caseback.

It is a detail made for the wearer, not the room. Most people will only ever see a round watch. You will know about the octagon every time you take it off.

In 2018, Glashütte Original gave the Sixties Panorama Date its annual color: green. The domed dial carries a dégradé, lighter at the center and deeper toward the edge. Milled markers and luminous dots rest on top, and the oversized Panorama Date reads at six. Inside the 42mm steel case, the automatic caliber 39-47 runs with swan-neck fine adjustment. The gradient falls a little differently on every piece, so no two are quite alike.

Only the essentials. The PAM111 distills the Luminor to its purest form: a matte black dial carrying only luminous numerals and a small seconds at nine. Lifted from the roll on a slow Saturday, it asks for a few turns of the crown before the first coffee. On the reverse, the restraint gives way to complexity: the hand-wound OP XI movement fills the caseback.

The first one was never sent to Portugal.

A wholesaler in Lisbon had asked IWC for something that did not exist yet: a wristwatch that kept time the way a marine chronometer did. IWC's answer was to stop designing for the wrist. They took a pocket watch movement, seventeen lignes across, and built the case around it.

That is the whole reason a Portugieser looks the way it does. The proportions were never a style. They were a consequence.

The first recorded delivery, in February 1939, went to a wholesaler in Odessa. The watch named for Portugal began its life on the far side of Europe, and the one in these photographs is its descendant: the same name, the same idea, more than eighty years on.

A shape that came from a reason has nothing to go out of fashion. Here it is in green, the kind that reads almost black until the light finds it, with a smooth bezel and nothing applied that did not need to be there.

Some colours belong to a team before they belong to a watch.

The Black Bay Ceramic Blue takes its dial from the Formula 1 grid, the same blue worn trackside since 2024 by the Visa Cash App RB Formula 1 team. Set in contrast against a 41mm matte black ceramic case, micro-blasted, and built as a single monobloc piece, for a contrast that reads as sharply in daylight as it does in the cockpit.

Before they could see the far side of the Moon, they had to disappear behind it.

In December 1968, the crew of Apollo 8 became the first people to leave Earth’s orbit and travel to the Moon. Each pass took them behind it and out of radio contact, into a silence no one had crossed before. The phrase they used as they went dark has since become part of the mission’s legend: “We’ll see you on the other side.”

More than fifty years on, that journey lives on through the Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon Apollo 8.

A watch that will never look quite like anyone else’s.

When this Black Bay Bronze debuted at Baselworld in 2016, the material was the point. Bronze was not chosen for permanence. It was chosen for the way it yields to time: oxidizing slowly, taking on a patina shaped by the conditions of the life it leads. What life will this one lead.
