Experimenting with Rabbit Breeds 1.2
Thoughts on the Holland Lop rabbit!

I have been working with this breed for a year now. For the most part, I like them. But the difference in posing has me hestitating to keep them around. Here are my pros and cons for this breed:
Pros:
Small, compact size
Floppy ears
Calm, Sweet temperment

Cons:
Posed differently than commerical breeds

Plans change based on circumstances…

The original plan for the goat pasture was to fence in the back north section of the yard for the goats. We even seeded it last fall for this exact purpose. But then spring came…

With spring came the rain. This area of the yard has always been a low spot. Last fall, we did some work to level it out. But we didn’t know if it would be enough to keep it more dry the following year…. It wasn’t. This area is still far too wet in the spring to be used as a goat pasture. So, on to plan B!

Plan B: Fence in a new area by the goat shed and let the grass grow! - or in this case, the thistles 🫠

Part of this spot was once a garden. When we decided to move all our gardening into one area, we let this garden grow up. That means that mostly weeds grew - and most of those weeds are thistles. The goats don’t seem to mind, though. In fact, they love it!

Thoughts on the Rex rabbit!

After working with them for just a little bit, I'm impressed. They are calm and easy to handle, plus they have that plush fur that I love! I also love the variety of color and pattern in this litter! So far, these guys are all pros!

Current Rabbitry Outline for the Year:

In June, I completely pivoted on my rabbitry goals for this year. Here is what things will look like now:
For the rest of this year, I am going to be working with several different breeds to see which one or ones I like best. I'll be sharing my thoughts on each breed as we go along.

For those wondering, the Silver Fox rabbits ARE staying! I will continue to have some pop up that are looking for new stomping grounds. Any other breeds that you see on this page are a part of my experiment and, as of now, are not considered permanent residents. As I work with these breeds more, I may have some of them needing new stomping grounds as well.

I’ve been feeling unsettled lately… For years, I have always wanted to try some other breeds of rabbits. But I always told myself that it was a someday thing. Well, this year, I have felt unsure of where I want to take the rabbitry. I love working with the Silver Fox breed, and I know that I want to continue working with them and building a line of my own. But everything around the Mini Rex rabbits has been up in the air. Do I get a new buck? If I do, what color? What would be my goal? Do I want to switch to doing a different color? Do I want to keep them at all?

With these questions running around and around my mind, I made a slit-second decision when I saw an ad from another rabbitry. They were having a moving sale, and the breeds they had were the ones I’ve always wanted to try. So, I went and got them.

This isn’t the path I planned on for this year. But I think it is important for me to experiment a little to see which breed I like best. I have multiple breeds now, and having them at the same time, working with them at the same time, will show me which ones I like best. Who knows? Maybe Silver Fox is my breed. But maybe there’s another one, too….

Meet our newest additions to the homestead!
2 Pekin ducks
2 Magpie drakes
4 Muscovy babies
And a goose named Bob!

The Pekin ducks are already laying eggs, we get one almost every morning! These are multipurpose birds, producing both eggs and meat, which makes them a great fit for the homestead!

The Finished Grape Arbor

We started working on this last year, but then things popped up, and we weren't able to finish it like we had in mind. This spring, we had the time and resources to finally finish it! It's so satisfying to finally see it done!

The big plants are juicing grapes, and the little ones are table grapes. The older plants didn't produce anything worth picking, probably because we had to disturb them some while redoing the arbor. Maybe next year they will do better.

Just a quick check in and to give everyone an update.

Life has been very busy lately, and when things get busy we stick to what is priority. Family always comes first, followed by home and the homestead. All social media platforms are an extra. And right now, we just don’t have time for extras.

Once things settle down, I'll share more detailed updates. But until then, just know that we are well and happy.

Hope everyone is doing well and surviving the heat! Stay cool out there!
